Over 80 big band jazz musicians will be coming together for the first annual Fort Wayne Big Band Jazz Fest on June 26th from noon to 5:30pm. The IPFW Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Farrell Vernon, Don Pearson’s Conglomernotes Big Band, the Blue River Big Band, the Mark Van Cleave Jazz Orchestra, and the festival’s own Fort Wayne All Star Big Band will round out the festival with an afternoon full of the Big Band band sounds in the Midwest! And it is all FREE!!!
“Fort Wayne and North East Indiana has always been a hotbed for good music and especially jazz”, Mark says. “It is going to be a real BLAST having all of these musicians performing throughout the afternoon!”
We are re-introducing Big Band jazz to the community with events like the Fort Wayne Big Band Jazz Fest and developing a new audience for this powerful music.
"Jazz and Big Band music are both an American original! It is important that we keep this musical heritage alive through live performances like this. If we put it on a shelf in a museum some place, the music will die forever." Mark says.
All bands will perform in the band shell outdoors in front of the downtown library (900 Library Plaza, Fort Wayne, IN) starting at noon with the Fort Wayne All Star Big Band performing in the indoor Theater starting at 4:30. Bring a lawn chair for an afternoon of swingin’ Big Band sounds!
